Breast Reduction in St. Louis, MO

When it comes to breasts, bigger isn’t always better.

While some girls develop large breasts in their teen years, other women see a significant increase in size after having one or more children. The extra weight and stress that oversized breasts place on the body affect everything from physical comfort to posture to confidence levels.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Brian Porshinsky performs breast reduction surgeries for women in St. Louis, MO.

What Is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery reduces the size and weight of oversized, cumbersome breasts. This procedure provides aesthetic and physical benefits, making breast reduction one of the most rewarding plastic surgery procedures for both patients and surgeons.

During breast reduction surgery, excess breast tissue, fat, and skin is removed to create a lighter and more proportional breast contour. The tissue removal is combined with a breast lift to ensure that the newly reduced breasts are lifted and tightened and that the areolas are resized and repositioned.

Why Should I Choose Dr. Porshinsky for My Breast Reduction?

Dr. Porshinsky is a board-certified plastic surgeon with over a decade of breast surgery experience. With Dr. Porshinsky, your safety always comes first, and with his team, you are in skilled and experienced hands.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Reduction?

Women of all ages choose breast reduction to reduce the size of their breasts. This allows for the following benefits:

  • More proportional body contours
  • Reduction in back, neck, shoulder, and chest pain
  • Alleviates grooves in the shoulder blades (from bra straps)
  • Less skin irritation beneath the breasts
  • Lighter breasts that fit better into clothing
  • Increased confidence

Am I a Candidate for Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction is a plastic surgery procedure chosen by women just entering adulthood and women who have long passed their childbearing years. Candidates for this procedure are unhappy with the look and feel of their large breasts and want to do something about it.

The ideal breast reduction candidate should have fully developed breasts, be in good overall health, not smoke, and have realistic expectations for their results.

How Is Breast Reduction Performed?

Breast reduction is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. You will be cleared to go home within a few hours of your surgery.

The techniques used during breast reduction will depend on the size of the reduction you are searching for.

While most breast reductions follow an anchor incision pattern, where the incision goes around the areola, vertically down the lower pole of the breast, and across the breast crease, this incision can be modified if you are searching for a minor reduction.

From here, excess glandular tissue and fat are removed.

Breast Reduction and Breast Lift

Breast reduction is performed alongside breast lift surgery (mastopexy) to address the ptosis (sagging) that often accompanies oversized breasts.

Even with younger patients, the heavy weight of the breasts stretches the skin and tissues, causing the breasts to droop and sag. A breast lift is performed to tighten these tissues and help shape a round, perky breast. Additionally, this technique allows the nipple-areola complex (NAC) to be reduced and moved to a higher, more aesthetically pleasing position.

Gynecomastia Surgery

While breast reduction is performed to minimize the size of female breasts, gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) can be performed on men dealing with gynecomastia. Gynecomastia, the condition known to cause “man boobs,” can affect men at any age and often requires a surgical fix.

Similar to female breast reduction, gynecomastia surgery eliminates excess breast tissue, fat, and skin in the chest by combining excision methods and often liposuction.

When Will I See My Breast Reduction Results?

You will start to notice your breast reduction results immediately after your surgery, which will gradually improve as the bruising and swelling subside. Most patients see their final results within a few weeks.

Your breast reduction results will be long lasting, barring significant weight fluctuations and pregnancy.

After this surgery, you can expect lighter, more comfortable, and better-shaped breasts.

How Long Is Breast Reduction Recovery?

Breast reduction patients can expect to notice their lighter and smaller breasts immediately after surgery. Pain is controlled with oral pain medications and resolves over several days. Swelling and bruising will resolve over the next several weeks.

Your breasts will be wrapped in a compression bra to help reduce swelling, promote circulation, and protect your healing incisions. While you will be instructed how long to wear this garment, most women keep it on around the clock (except for showering) for several weeks. Following that, switching to a supportive sports bra or non-wired bra is recommended. Underwires can irritate the healing incisions.

Most patients return to work and their normal activities after one or two weeks; however, strenuous upper-body exercise must be avoided for at least six weeks or until Dr. Porshinsky has cleared you.
