Breast Lift (Mastopexy) Surgery in St. Louis, MO

When considering plastic surgery for the breasts, many women tend to think about enlarging or reducing their size; however, lifting sagging breasts can result in some of the most positive transformations.

Every woman’s breasts will start to sag and droop eventually. This can be expedited or made worse when other factors like pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, or naturally heavy breasts come into play.

Breast lift surgery elevates and tightens sagging breasts to create a more youthful, perkier appearance. Breast implants can be added to restore or increase the volume of the lifted breasts. This is known as a breast lift/augmentation or a mastopexy/augmentation. Dr. Brian Porshinsky performs breast lift surgery for women in St. Louis, Missouri.

What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift (mastopexy) transforms dropping, sagging breasts by surgically tightening the underlying breast tissues and removing loose, sagging skin. This surgery can be performed as a stand-alone procedure or with a breast augmentation. While breast lift surgery helps transform the look and shape of the breast, the breast lift itself has little to no impact on breast volume. Volume requires the addition of an implant.

In addition to elevating the breasts and improving projection, mastopexy can reposition the nipple-areola complex higher for a more youthful, aesthetically pleasing location.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Lift Surgery?

Women choose breast lift surgery to address sagging, drooping breasts associated with age, weight loss, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

A breast lift can:

  • Tighten sagging breasts
  • Lift the breasts so that they no longer rest and rub against the top of the ribcage
  • Reposition the nipple-areola complexes
  • Enhance the shape of the newly lifted breasts
  • Accompany breast augmentation for a more transformative results
  • Increase comfort and confidence

Am I a Candidate for a Breast Lift?

While usually associated with age, sagging breasts can occur at any age, even in younger women with larger, heavier breasts that stretch the tissue prematurely. This can present the need for a breast lift at any age.

Women interested in breast lift surgery often feel self-conscious about the appearance of their sagging breasts in and out of clothing. Candidates should be in good health, have a BMI under 32, not smoke, and have realistic expectations of their results.

Women who turn to this procedure should not be pregnant or breastfeeding. This surgery can be performed on younger women who wish to become pregnant in the future; however, it is important to remember that pregnancy can stretch the tissues and result in additional looseness. Certain breast lift techniques may also interfere with your ability to breastfeed.

How Is Breast Lift Surgery Performed?

Your breast lift will be performed under general anesthesia. The techniques used will vary depending on the extent of breast ptosis (sagging) and the amount of excess skin.

Breast Lift Incisions

Depending on your needs, one of the following breast lift incisions will be used.

  • Anchor incision: An incision will run around the areola, down the lower pole of the breast, and across the inframammary fold (crease beneath the breast). This allows for the most significant lift and shaping capabilities.
  • Lollipop incision: An incision will run around the areola and down the lower pole of the breast. This technique allows for moderate correction.
  • Donut incision: Two concentric incisions are made around the areola to tighten tissues and remove some excess skin. This incision technique only allows for minimal correction and tightening.

Breast Lift and Augmentation

Breast augmentation and lift are performed for women who wish for increased volume and elevated breasts. This combination is particularly common after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss has resulted in a loss of volume; however, it can be performed for any woman looking for an increase in size and a lift.

When Will I See My Breast Lift Results?

You will notice your breast lift results immediately; however, it will take several weeks for the bruising and swelling to subside. Breast lift results are long-lasting, barring significant weight fluctuations and pregnancies. This procedure cannot stop the natural aging process or gravity so it is possible to see some drooping later.

Most women are thrilled about their results and their more youthful-looking breasts.

How Long Is Breast Lift Recovery?

Breast lift surgery is an outpatient procedure, and you can return home shortly after. This operation will result in bruising, swelling, and discomfort in the chest.

Your breasts will be wrapped in a compression bra that should be worn at all times during the initial stage of your recovery. This garment promotes circulation, reduces swelling, and protects your newly lifted and enhanced breasts. Once Dr. Porshinsky clears you to remove the compression bra, it is wise to wear supportive, wire-free sports bras. Supportive bras are a must after your breast lift to ensure that your breasts remain lifted.

Most breast lift patients return to their normal activities, including work, after one or two weeks; however, all upper-body exercises must be avoided for at least six weeks or until cleared by Dr. Porshinsky.
